Phoenicians founded Sousse in the 9th century BCE, and it grew into one of Carthage's most important Mediterranean ports. It later flourished under Roman and then Islamic rule, and its old medina and seafront ribat still stand witness to over 2,800 years of continuous history — recognized today as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
