Luxor's Arabic name, Al-Uqsur, means "the palaces" — plural of "qasr" — because early Arab settlers, seeing its massive pharaonic temples and monuments, mistook them for royal palaces. The European name "Luxor" is simply a rendering of that Arabic word.
