Samarkand's ancient name comes from Sogdian, most likely combining “samar” (stone) and “kand” (fort or town) — meaning “stone fort.” It's one of Central Asia's oldest continuously used city names; the Greeks called it “Marakanda” when Alexander the Great reached it.
