Bukhara was one of the most important Silk Road stops and a major center of learning in the Islamic world, earning it the title “Noble Bukhara.” It became the capital of the Samanid state in the 9th and 10th centuries and produced towering scholars such as Imam al-Bukhari, with Ibn Sina (Avicenna) born nearby. Its beautifully preserved old town remains a UNESCO World Heritage site today.
