Bangkok's foreign name comes from an older village called 'Bang Makok,' meaning 'place of the makok fruit,' a wild olive-like tree that once grew along the Chao Phraya River. Thais themselves, though, call their capital 'Krung Thep' — short for its long official name meaning 'City of Angels.'
