Cape Town, gateway to Africa's most beautiful road trips
Unlike Johannesburg, where safari (Kruger) is the region's star, Cape Town's surroundings offer a different kind of "safari": breathtaking landscapes of vineyards, mountain valleys, and coastline stretching hundreds of kilometers, both well worth serious planning.
Cape Winelands: Stellenbosch and Franschhoek in a day
The Cape Winelands region is one of the world's oldest grape-growing and wine-producing areas outside Europe, and sits only about 45-50 minutes by car from central Cape Town, making it an entirely manageable day trip. Stellenbosch itself is South Africa's second-oldest European settlement, with cobbled streets and carefully preserved Dutch colonial buildings, well worth wandering on foot on its own merits, separate from any vineyard visit. About 30 minutes further, Franschhoek (founded by French Huguenot refugees) is famed for its upscale restaurants and elegant estates, sometimes nicknamed South Africa's "food capital." For those who prefer self-driving, the roads are good and direct, and distances relatively short. For the longer Garden Route trip, renting a car becomes nearly essential given the route's many branches and the numerous desirable stops along it.
