Hargeisa's name is thought to come from the Arabic phrase "Harar as-Saghir" ("Little Harar"), since Sheikh Madar, the settlement's founder, wanted it to rival the Ethiopian city of Harar as a center of Islamic learning. Another theory links the name to "where hides are sold," reflecting the region's leather trade.
