Hargeisa emerged in the late 1800s as a religious settlement founded by Sheikh Madar near a watering stop on a nomadic trade route to Harar. The British later made it the capital of British Somaliland in 1941, and today it serves as the capital of the self-declared state of Somaliland, which broke away in 1991.
