Salalah's Khareef is a rare climatic phenomenon on the Arabian Peninsula: southwest monsoon winds hit the Qara Mountains and push up low clouds that drench the highlands in continuous mist and drizzle from late June through September, while the rest of Oman and the Gulf bakes in ordinary summer heat. The result: green plateaus, seasonal waterfalls, and fog drifting between the peaks — a sight found almost nowhere else on the peninsula except a few similar highlands further south (like Yemen's Mukalla area).
Where to see the greenery
Salalah's coastal plain greens up first, but the mountains (Jabal Qara and Jabal Al Qamar) are where the transformation is most dramatic. Take the Salalah–Thumrait road up into the highlands, where Dhofari cattle graze on green pastures amid fog that can sometimes cut visibility to a few meters — drive carefully. Viewpoints near Taqah and Wadi Adonib are among the best spots to catch the contrast between the green mountain and the dry plain below.
Waterfalls and lagoons
Wadi Darbat remains the star, but Ain Razat, Ain Hamran, and Ain Athoum offer calmer, closer-to-town water features. After heavy rain, small seasonal waterfalls activate in spots like Tayq — worth a quick stop even though they don't run year-round.
Birds and wildlife
Khareef season draws migratory birds, most notably flamingo flocks that occasionally appear on the Wadi Darbat lagoon, plus seabirds along the coast. The protected Jabal Samhan area east of the city is home to the endangered Arabian leopard (rarely spotted) and a variety of raptors.
Necessary precautions
High humidity and thick fog make mountain roads slippery, and authorities sometimes temporarily close certain routes after heavy rain due to flash-flood risk in the wadis. Check local environmental authority alerts before heading to any wadi after strong rainfall, and avoid swimming in a wadi channel during or right after rain.
Best time of day to visit: early morning (before 8am) usually offers the clearest visibility before fog thickens by midday, while sunset gives a beautiful golden light on the pastures if the fog has cleared.
