Malé has been the political, economic, and religious heart of the Maldives archipelago for centuries, first settled by migrants from South India and Sri Lanka. Its defining moment came in 1153, when the local ruler converted to Islam and Malé became the seat of the Maldivian Sultanate — which lasted nearly 800 years across six dynasties and 93 sultans before the modern republic was formed.
