Petra was the thriving capital of the Nabataean trading kingdom, a strategic hub on the incense and spice caravan routes linking Arabia to the eastern Mediterranean. The Nabataeans carved iconic facades like the Treasury and the Monastery directly into the rose-colored rock. Forgotten for centuries, the city was rediscovered by Swiss explorer Johann Burckhardt in 1812 and is now one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
