Hinduism and Buddhism reached Bali via Java centuries earlier, and the island's first local kingdom formed around the 10th century. Balinese culture developed a rich royal tradition blending native spirit-worship with Hindu influence, and the island remains, to this day, the only Hindu-majority island in Muslim-majority Indonesia — known worldwide for its temples and distinctive artistic rituals.
