Santorini is a volcanic island shaped by a massive eruption around 3,600 years ago that buried the thriving Bronze Age settlement of Akrotiri — an event some link to Plato's legend of lost Atlantis. Greeks later resettled the island, and the remarkably preserved ruins of Akrotiri, buried under volcanic ash, are still known today as the “Greek Pompeii.”
