Santorini is known worldwide as a romantic destination, but it can also be a great family experience if you choose the right areas and activities and work around a few of the island's geographic challenges.
Challenge one: the terrain. The main villages, like Fira and Oia, are built on the edge of the caldera cliffs, with steep, stepped lanes that can be tiring for small children or strollers. For this reason, many families prefer staying in flatter areas near the beach, like Kamari or Perissa, rather than the crowded, steep lanes of Oia.
Kamari beach: the best family option. Blue Flag-certified, this is an organized beach with long stretches of black sand (and pebbles), lined by a pedestrian promenade packed with restaurants, cafés, and shower facilities — making it ideal for spending a full day with children without needing to travel around. Light water sports activities suited to teens are also available.
Boat trips: A boat tour around the caldera to see the active "Nea Kameni" volcano and nearby hot springs is a fun experience for older kids, usually taking about half a day. Choose small, organized tours that include a swim stop, since they break up the monotony of village-hopping.
Pyrgos village and local traditions: Instead of the crowded Oia sunset scene, families can visit quiet Pyrgos during the day, where narrow stone lanes are safe for walking and exploring without much car traffic.
Practical tips: Book a car with appropriate child seats if you plan to move between the south coast beaches, since public transfer services are limited. Bring strong sunscreen and beach shoes since black sand heats up very fast, and avoid the caldera edge in Fira or Oia at dusk with small children due to heavy crowds and cliff edges that aren't fully guarded at some points.
