Munich's German name “München” comes from “Mönche,” meaning “monks.” The city's first official record, dated 1158, described it as “by the monks,” referring to a Benedictine monastery that stood there before Duke Henry the Lion built the town beside it — which is why a small monk still appears on Munich's coat of arms today.
