Duke Henry the Lion officially founded Munich in 1158 as a trading market on the Isar River. It later became the capital of Bavaria and seat of the Wittelsbach dynasty for centuries. The city hosted the first Oktoberfest in 1810 and the 1972 Summer Olympics, and today stands as one of Germany's leading economic and cultural centers.
