Since ancient times, Batumi served as a Greek and later Roman port on the Black Sea, before passing under Ottoman and Russian rule. It flourished in the late 19th century as a major export port for Baku's oil, carried in by pipeline and railway, and today it has transformed into a modern resort city with skyscrapers and casinos lining its waterfront.
