Settlement at Bahir Dar dates back to the 13th century with the building of an early church in the area, and the town has long been tied to the ancient monasteries scattered across Lake Tana's islands and shores, some dating to the 14th–16th centuries. It later grew into a modern city near the source of the Blue Nile and the famous Tis Issat Falls.
