Day 1: Baotu Spring and the old city center. Start your morning at Baotu Spring Park, entering through the south gate for a full loop that ends at the north gate. The main spring has flowed naturally and continuously for centuries, surrounded by classical gardens, corridors, and traditional pavilions that make simply wandering through it genuinely relaxing. In the afternoon, walk or take a short taxi to Quancheng Square (Spring City Square), Jinan's largest central plaza and home to the famous "Spring" fountain-statue — 38 meters tall and 170 tons — which is beautifully lit at sunset. End the day at old Furong Street, a traditional alley over 600 years old, packed with local food stalls and classic wooden shopfronts — a great spot to sample local snacks like youxuan (fried spiral pastry) and spring-water tea.
Day 2: Daming Lake and Thousand Buddha Mountain. Daming Lake is Jinan's largest lake, sitting right in the city center, and along with Baotu Spring and Thousand Buddha Mountain forms the "three symbols" of the city. Stroll along its green banks and visit the historic Chaoran Tower overlooking the water. The best time to visit depends on season: spring for blossoms and tall willows, summer for blooming lotus, autumn for the golden ginkgo trees around the shore. In the afternoon, head to Thousand Buddha Mountain (Qianfo Shan), 2.5 km southeast of the city, where hundreds of Buddha statues have been carved into the mountain's rock faces since the Sui Dynasty (581-618 CE), alongside the historic Xingguo Temple and Wanfo Cave (Ten Thousand Buddha Cave). Walking among these ancient rock carvings amid greenery offers a calm, spiritual feel quite different from the bustle of the city sites.
Practical tip: these three sites are relatively close to one another and easy to link via local taxi or the Didi app, with admission fees that are usually nominal — just a few yuan for some. Give yourself enough time in the early morning to beat the crowds, especially on Chinese weekends.
