Four days is enough to build a balanced picture of Guangzhou — a city with two thousand years of trading history that today is a forest of skyscrapers connected by a lightning-fast metro. This itinerary is arranged geographically to minimize backtracking, and can easily be stretched or compressed.
Day 1: Yuexiu Park and the old downtown
Start at Yuexiu Park, Guangzhou's largest park, home to the Five-Ram Sculpture symbolizing the city's founding legend, plus surviving sections of the old city wall. In the afternoon head to Beijing Road pedestrian street, a busy shopping strip built over exposed archaeological layers visible through glass flooring spanning several dynasties. Close the evening with dinner at a traditional Cantonese restaurant nearby.
Day 2: The Muslim quarter and maritime Silk Road heritage
This day is devoted to the city's deep Islamic roots. Start with Huaisheng Mosque, traditionally said to have been founded around 627 CE by a companion of the Prophet ﷺ, making it one of the oldest mosques in the world — still active, with its famous "Lighthouse" minaret. Then head to Xiaobei, Guangzhou's "Muslim quarter," where Hui Chinese, Uyghur, Pakistani, and African halal restaurants have clustered for decades — have lunch there. The evening suits a visit to nearby Shamian Island, with its European colonial-era buildings along the Pearl River.
Day 3: Modern landmarks and city panorama
Spend the morning at Chen Clan Academy, a Qing-dynasty architectural masterpiece with carved gates and traditional courtyards. In the afternoon head south to Canton Tower, where you can ride the observation deck or, for thrill-seekers, the Ferris wheel at its summit. In the evening, watch the Pearl River's night illumination from the opposite bank or a short boat cruise.
Day 4: Flex day — shopping or a short trip
The final day is flexible: shoppers can explore the wholesale clothing markets or the huge Baiyun mall complexes, while nature lovers can take a one-day bullet-train trip to nearby Foshan or Chimelong theme park. If your trip overlaps with the Canton Fair (April or October), reserve at least half a day to visit the enormous Pazhou complex, even just as a curious visitor.
General tips
Book a hotel near a major metro station on Line 1 or 2 to ease movement between these areas. The humid summer may require reordering days to avoid walking under the midday sun — in that case, prioritize Chen Clan Academy or air-conditioned museums for the afternoon, saving parks and the island for early morning or evening.
