In the Panyu countryside south of Guangzhou, near the old town of Shawan, Baomo Garden offers a completely different face from the city: water, stone bridges and pavilions with upturned eaves. The garden was created in memory of Bao Zheng, the judge who became a byword for justice and integrity in Chinese culture, and it was rebuilt on a larger scale in the 1990s. It makes a half-day outing for anyone who loves calm and fine craftsmanship. The garden also gives you a chance to see the Pearl River Delta countryside, with its canals and villages, far from the towers you associate with Guangzhou.
Why It's Worth a Visit
- A Lingnan-style water garden: canals and ponds crossed by many stone bridges, with pavilions and wooden galleries reflected on the water.
- A giant ceramic mural: the garden's best-known piece is a long ceramic relief recreating the classic Chinese painting Along the River During the Qingming Festival.
- Artisans at work: carvings in wood, brick and stone and ceramic figures decorate walls and roofs, alongside halls displaying heritage collections.
- A companion next door: it adjoins Nanyue Garden, so you can visit both on the same day.
Tips Before You Go
- The garden is fairly far from central Guangzhou, so plan a taxi or ride-hailing app, or join an organised tour.
- Early morning is best for photos and quiet, before the tour buses arrive.
- Some open courtyards have little shade, so bring an umbrella and water, especially in summer.
- Ask at the ticket office about a combined ticket with the neighbouring garden if you plan to see both.
