Zell am See grew up around a monastic cell founded around 740 AD by order of the Bishop of Salzburg, first recorded in a 743 document as "Cella in Bisontio." It became a market town in 1357, and over the last two centuries has transformed into a beloved Alpine resort, drawing visitors year-round to its turquoise lake and surrounding mountains.
