Zell am See is an ideal destination for combining lakeside relaxation with high-mountain adventure in one short trip. Here's a tested three-day plan.

Day 1: The lake and the town. Start with a walk along the Seepromenade, the main lakeside walkway, then take a boat cruise on Lake Zell (Zeller See) to enjoy views of the surrounding mountains from the water. In the afternoon, ride the cable car up to the summit of Schmittenhöhe, which overlooks both the town and the lake at once — one of the region's finest panoramic viewpoints, especially at sunset.

Day 2: The Kitzsteinhorn glacier, whose peak reaches 3,203 meters, the most famous mountain in the region. Ride the modern "K-onnection" cable car system departing from neighboring Kaprun, which takes you quickly and comfortably up to the "Top of Salzburg" viewing platform at 3,029 meters, with views stretching across dozens of surrounding Alpine peaks. The glacier stays open for visits year-round, and a dedicated snow play area for sledding operates even at the height of summer, above 3,000 meters.

Day 3: The Sigmund Thun Klamm gorge in Kaprun, a suspended wooden walkway running through a narrow rock cleft carved by a glacial river over thousands of years — a refreshing experience, especially on hot summer days. If you want to go further afield, dedicate a half-day to the famous Krimml Waterfalls, Austria's highest, within Hohe Tauern National Park about an hour's drive away — one of the most striking natural sights in all of Austria.

Practical tip: book Kitzsteinhorn cable car tickets online in advance, especially at peak summer, and bring a warm jacket even in July, since temperatures at 3,000 meters drop sharply compared to the town below.
