Unlike Salalah, Muscat is a more classic coastal-desert city with a relatively predictable climate, but there are important seasonal differences worth planning around.

What to pack in summer (May-September)

High heat (can exceed 40°C) and noticeable coastal humidity. Pack loose, light summer clothing, high-SPF sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. Avoid outdoor activities between 11am and 4pm, and schedule outdoor sightseeing for early morning or after sunset.

What to pack in winter (October-April)

Mild and pleasant, especially at night in December and January when evening temperatures drop noticeably. Pack light layers: a shirt for daytime and a thin jacket for evenings — this is the best season for extended outdoor activities like walking Old Muscat or sitting at corniche cafés.

Constants that never change

Modest clothing for the Grand Mosque and historic sites, comfortable walking shoes (Muscat demands a lot of walking through souqs and sites), a UK-style (Type G) power adapter, and a local SIM or activated international roaming — most of Muscat has good coverage, unlike remote mountain areas.

Realistic budget for a 4-day trip for two

Mid-range estimate outside peak season (prices rise 20-40% in December-January and holiday periods):

  • Accommodation: mid-range 3-4 star hotel in Qurum or Al Mouj, 35-55 OMR/night × 4 = 140-220 OMR.
  • Car rental: 15-20 OMR/day × 4 = 60-80 OMR.
  • Food: 18-30 OMR/day for two = 72-120 OMR.
  • Activities (museums, boat tour, Opera House if a show is on): 20-40 OMR total.
  • Shopping (silver, gifts from Muttrah Souq): flexible, budget at least 25 OMR.

Rough total: 317-485 OMR (roughly 3,090-4,730 SAR) for four days for two, not including flights.

Saving tip: staying in the Qurum area instead of luxury hotels near Old Muscat or Al Mouj saves a noticeable amount without sacrificing location, and having your main meal at local restaurants in Muttrah Souq or popular Indian eateries is significantly cheaper than hotel restaurants, often with comparable or better quality.
