El Retiro Park (Parque del Buen Retiro) is far more than Madrid's "green lung" — it's an open-air museum and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, spanning over 125 hectares that blend nature, historic architecture, and leisure in one place. Originally a private royal garden before opening to the public, it still carries the mark of its royal past in every corner.

The Lake and the Monument to Alfonso XII

The park's beating heart is its large artificial lake (Estanque), where you can rent a rowboat for about €8 for 45 minutes and glide among swans and ducks against the majestic backdrop of the Monument to Alfonso XII, a grand display of columns and bronze and marble statuary stretching 86 meters long and 30 meters tall, designed in 1902 and formally inaugurated in 1922. It's one of the most photographed spots in all of Madrid.

The Crystal Palace

The Palacio de Cristal is one of the finest examples of iron-and-glass architecture in Spain, originally built for the 1887 Philippine Islands Exhibition and now managed by the Reina Sofía Museum as a contemporary art exhibition space with completely free entry. Important note for visitors: the palace is currently closed for renovation until 2027, so its stunning glass facade can currently only be admired from outside — still well worth a photo stop despite the closure.

The park houses several specialty gardens, including the classically Andalusian-inspired Jardines de Cecilio Rodríguez, the recently restored "Cat Mountain," the Rosaleda rose garden, and the Parterre Francés, home to a nearly 400-year-old Mexican conifer believed to be Madrid's oldest tree.

Entry to the park is completely free at all times, making it an ideal destination for budget-conscious families. The best time to visit is early morning to avoid summer heat, or afternoons in autumn when the trees turn warm colors. The park sits within easy reach of the Golden Triangle of Art (Prado, Reina Sofía, and Thyssen), making it a perfect rest stop between two museum visits in the same day, or a quiet family picnic spot away from downtown crowds.
