When Genghis razed Bukhara he stood before the 1127 minaret and spared it in awe: the Great Kalyan with fourteen brick-pattern bands — flanked by the congregational mosque and Mir-i-Arab madrasa, still teaching today. The square between them is Bukhara's finest standing spot, yours at dawn and dusk; the mosque court holds ten thousand in peace.
