Trabzon was founded by Greek colonists from Miletus in 756 BCE and was later part of the ancient Kingdom of Pontus. After Constantinople fell to the Crusaders in 1204, Trabzon became capital of the Byzantine successor state, the Empire of Trebizond, thriving as a key Silk Road stop linking Europe and Asia — until the Ottomans conquered it in 1461.
