The city was founded by Greek settlers as Byzantium in the 7th century BCE, then became Constantinople, capital of the Roman and later Byzantine Empire, in 330 CE. Ottoman Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror captured it in 1453, making it the Ottoman capital until 1923. Today Istanbul is Turkey's largest city and the meeting point of Europe and Asia.
