Phuket came under Thai rule around the 13th century, after previously being part of the Srivijaya empire. From the 16th century it became known as a major source of tin, drawing Portuguese and Chinese traders — especially Hokkien miners, who built the island's distinctive Old Town. Tin mining declined in the 1980s, and the island gradually transformed into a world-renowned tourist destination.
