Arusha began as an agricultural settlement of the Waarusha people and grew into one of East Africa's key cities. It hosted major historical moments, including the 1967 Arusha Declaration that shaped Tanzania's socialist policies, and later the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. Today it's best known as the main gateway for Serengeti safaris and Mount Kilimanjaro expeditions.
