Zermatt was just a small mountain farming village until British climber Edward Whymper made the first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865 with two local guides. The climb ended in tragedy when four team members fell to their deaths during the descent, but news of the feat spread worldwide, instantly turning Zermatt into a globally famous mountaineering and resort town — a status it still holds today.
