Madrid's name traces back to the Arabic "Mayrit" (from "majra," meaning water channel), referring to the underground water channels that once fed the site. It was founded in 865 AD by the Umayyad Emir Muhammad I of Córdoba as a military fort to defend Toledo from the Christian kingdoms to the north.
