The Romans founded the colony of "Barcino" in the 1st century BC atop an existing Iberian settlement, and it later became capital of the County of Barcelona and a key center of the Crown of Aragon. It grew into a major Mediterranean trading port and Catalonia's cultural capital, renowned for Gaudí's modernist architecture, and saw a global resurgence after hosting the 1992 Olympics.
