Riyadh grew as an agricultural oasis near Diriyah, stronghold of the First Saudi State. In 1902, Abdulaziz Al Saud recaptured it in the famous raid on Masmak Fortress, paving the way for it to become capital of the unified Kingdom of Saudi Arabia — growing from a small town into one of the Middle East's largest capitals.
