Around 647 CE, Caliph Uthman ibn Affan designated Jeddah as the official port for pilgrims arriving by sea to visit the holy city of Makkah, earning it the title “Gateway to Makkah.” Over the centuries it flourished as a trading hub and major Red Sea port, and today remains Saudi Arabia's commercial capital.
