Al-Ahsa National Park
Established in 1962, this park was previously known as the "Sand Reserve Project" and is defined by its wide open spaces and varied trees such as tamarisk and acacia, forming a rare stretch of greenery amid the desert landscape. Al-Asfar Lake
On the outskirts of Al-Ahsa, Al-Asfar Lake (also known as the Yellow Lake) sits tucked between golden sand dunes and is best reached by four-wheel drive. The lake is home to numerous migratory bird species, making it a favorite for birdwatchers and desert photographers alike, and it also serves as a great launch point for dune adventures, especially at sunset when the sky's colors reflect off the water's surface.

October through April is the best window to visit both sites, allowing more comfortable time outdoors without the punishing summer heat. Bring a camera and binoculars if you're into birdwatching at Al-Asfar Lake, and make sure you're driving a vehicle suited for sandy terrain if you head there independently rather than on an organized tour. Al-Ahsa National Park suits a full family day out, while Al-Asfar Lake is better for a shorter trip focused on relaxation and photography.
