The Almoravids founded Marrakesh in 1070 CE as the capital of an empire stretching from the Sahara to Andalusia. The city flourished as a key stop on trans-Saharan caravan routes, and successive Moroccan dynasties made it one of the country's four historic imperial capitals. Its red walls and old souks still carry traces of that past today.
