Langkawi is woven through with old Malay legends, most famously the 18th-century curse of Mahsuri, a woman wrongly executed who was said to have cursed the island for generations. Historically the island sat on a key trade route through the Strait of Malacca, and in modern times it has become a duty-free tourist destination and internationally recognized nature reserve.
