Kuala Lumpur was founded in 1857 when local chief Raja Abdullah sent a group of Chinese tin miners to the river confluence, where they struck rich tin deposits. The small settlement endured hard early years of fires, disease, and rival conflicts, but gradually grew into a major commercial and administrative center, becoming Malaysia's official capital after independence in 1957.
