After its Greek founding, Nice grew into a thriving Roman town, then spent centuries as part of the County of Nice under Italy's House of Savoy before formally joining France in 1860. That blend of Greek, Italian, and French influences gave the city its distinct Mediterranean character on the French Riviera.
