Cairo means "the Victorious" in Arabic. It was named by the Fatimid general Jawhar al-Siqilli when he founded the city north of Fustat in 969 CE, honoring Caliph al-Mu'izz — and, by tradition, marking the ascendant position of Mars, "the conquering star," at the moment of its founding.
