The City God Temple, locally known as Chenghuang Miao, stands at No. 249 Fangbang Middle Road in Huangpu District, within Shanghai's historic Old City. It was built during the Ming dynasty, in the Yongle era between 1403 and 1424, as a Taoist temple dedicated to the "City God," the spiritual protector of Shanghai.

The temple is one of the three largest of its kind in the Yangtze River Delta region and has historically honored notable local figures regarded as protectors of the city, including the official Qin Yubo. It features traditional decorated halls and gates in classical Chinese architectural style.
