The Big Buddha, known as the Tian Tan Buddha, sits atop a hill in Ngong Ping on Lantau Island, near the Buddhist Po Lin Monastery. The bronze statue stands about 34 metres tall and weighs around 250 tonnes, completed on 29 December 1993 after years of construction, and for a long time held the title of the tallest outdoor seated bronze Buddha in the world.

The statue is made of 202 bronze pieces mounted on an internal steel frame, with the face alone weighing around five tonnes. The Buddha sits on a lotus-petal base inspired by the shape of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, which gave the statue its name. Visitors reach it by climbing 268 steps, a symbolic journey often described as a path toward spiritual enlightenment.

The neighbouring Po Lin Monastery, founded by Buddhist monks in the early 20th century, is one of Hong Kong's most important Buddhist centres, and together the site draws thousands of visitors daily for meditation, photography and views of the surrounding mountains.
