The Hong Kong Museum of History opened in 1975 and is now housed in a dedicated building at 100 Chatham Road South, Tsim Sha Tsui East, Kowloon. The museum holds a collection of around 170,000 items spanning natural history, archaeology, ethnography and local heritage.

Its centrepiece is the permanent exhibition "The Hong Kong Story," first opened in 2001, which takes visitors on a chronological journey through the city's development, from geological eras and early civilisations, through the British colonial period, to modern transformations. The exhibition underwent a major renovation that reorganised its content into ten new galleries grouped under four main thematic sections.

The museum features life-size dioramas, original artefacts, and audiovisual effects that recreate scenes of everyday life in earlier eras, making it a leading educational and entertainment destination for understanding Hong Kong's layered cultural identity.
