Before oil there was pearl — and Muharraq its world capital: the Pearling Path (UNESCO 2012) threads 3.5km through 17 historic buildings, merchant and captain and diver houses to the majlises of old families — walked through living lanes under world-class restoration. Start at the visitor centre for map and story then wander free; Siyadi house and majlis and Sheikh Isa's house crown the architecture on or near the path; late afternoon softens the walk as lanes wake, Muharraq's heritage sweet-shops (Showaiter halwa!) the obligatory rest.
