Salzburg grew on the site of a Roman settlement called Juvavum, later becoming an independent ecclesiastical principality ruled by prince-archbishops from the 8th century onward, its grand baroque architecture funded by vast salt wealth. It formally joined Austria in 1816 after the Napoleonic Wars, and is the birthplace of composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
