Algiers' name comes from "al-jaza'ir," Arabic for "the islands," after a cluster of small islets that once sat off the coast before merging with the mainland. It's a shortened form of the older name "Jaza'ir Bani Mazghanna," after the Amazigh tribe that once lived there.
