Before booking your trip to Austria, here are the key practical points every Saudi and Gulf traveler should know.
Visa: Austria is a full Schengen member, so there is no visa-on-arrival and no exemption for Saudi passport holders. Applications go through VFS Global in Riyadh, Jeddah, or Dammam/Al Khobar, with an official fee of €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6-11 (under-6 exempt), plus VFS service fees of roughly SAR 120-160. Processing typically takes up to 15 working days but can extend to 30-45 days during peak seasons, so applying 60-90 days ahead is wise. You'll need medical insurance covering at least €30,000, valid across the entire Schengen area.
Currency: The euro (EUR) is the official currency. ATMs are widespread, and cards (including Apple Pay and contactless) are accepted almost everywhere, though small cafes, local markets, and public restrooms sometimes require cash. Avoid airport currency exchanges, which offer weaker rates.
Weather: Summer (June-August) is warm at 18-24°C, while winter (December-February) is very cold and can drop below freezing; spring and autumn are mild and good for long walks. Pack adjustable layers regardless of season, given how quickly alpine weather can change.
Language: German is the official language, but English is widely spoken in hotels, restaurants, and tourist sites, so communication is rarely an issue.
Tipping: Not mandatory but customary at around 5-10% in restaurants, usually done by rounding up the bill.
Safety: Austria is one of the safest countries in Europe, with very low crime even in crowded tourist areas.
Halal food: Salzburg has a reasonable number of halal restaurants (Turkish, Indian, Middle Eastern) and mosques or Islamic centers, including the Islamic Cultural Center of Salzburg, which has separate prayer areas for men and women and a halal restaurant.
Electricity and time: Plugs are Type C/F at 230V, so bring the right adapter. Local time is Central European Time (CET), shifting an hour ahead in summer (CEST) — roughly two to three hours behind Saudi Arabia depending on the season.
