Salalah is relatively easy to prepare for compared to other destinations, but there are important differences between packing for Khareef season and packing for the rest of the year.

What to pack during Khareef (June-September)

The weather is humid and mild rather than hot like the rest of the Gulf, so you need light layers: a cotton shirt and a thin, water-resistant jacket (not a heavy coat) for the continuous drizzle, closed non-slip shoes for walking on wet mountain paths, and a small umbrella or rain-resistant head cover. High humidity means clothes dry slowly, so pack more socks and underwear than usual.

What to pack outside Khareef (October-May)

Dry, sunny, and warm during the day, relatively cool at night in winter (December-February). Pack light summer clothes, high-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and a light jacket for evenings.

Constants that never change

Modest clothing for religious or historic sites, comfortable walking shoes for long stretches in souqs and archaeological sites, a UK-style (Type G) power adapter, and a local SIM card or international roaming bundle activated before you travel, since coverage inside some mountain wadis is weak.

Realistic budget for a 4-day trip for two

This is a mid-range estimate outside Khareef's peak (prices rise 30-70% in July-August):

  • Accommodation: mid-range 3-4 star hotel, 30-45 OMR/night × 4 = 120-180 OMR.
  • Car rental: 15-20 OMR/day × 4 = 60-80 OMR (including approximate fuel).
  • Food: 15-25 OMR/day for two = 60-100 OMR.
  • Activities and entry fees (museum, boats, tours): 15-25 OMR total.
  • Shopping (frankincense, gifts): flexible, budget at least 20 OMR.

Rough total: 275-405 OMR (roughly 2,680-3,950 SAR) for four days for two, not including flights.

Saving tip: book hotel and car as a bundle through local booking sites, which is usually cheaper than booking separately, and eat one main restaurant meal a day while relying on grocery stores for snacks to cut costs without sacrificing the experience.
