What is dune bashing?

Dune bashing is high-skill four-wheel-drive driving over rolling sand dunes, with an experienced driver gliding, climbing, and dropping at sharp angles for a sensation somewhere between an off-road ride and a roller coaster. It's led by certified professional drivers who know the sand well, and it's entirely safe when booked through licensed safari operators with properly prepared vehicles (partially deflated tires, reinforced 4x4s).

Khor Al Adaid: the Inland Sea

The most famous safari destination is Khor Al Adaid, known locally as the "Inland Sea," a unique natural inlet stretching roughly 9 miles long and 7.5 miles wide, where a gulf of seawater reaches deep into the desert so that golden dunes meet blue water directly — one of the rare places on earth with this exact geographic feature. The site sits on the southern border between Qatar and Saudi Arabia, was declared a nature reserve in 2007, and has been on UNESCO's tentative World Heritage list since 2008 (not yet a full inscribed World Heritage Site). The lack of rainfall makes its waters especially salty, creating a unique ecosystem that includes sea turtles and desert foxes, and at low tide you can spot fossils of ancient marine life like shells and coral.

Most desert safari tours run 4 to 6 hours including travel time from Doha. A typical trip includes dune bashing, sandboarding, a stop at Khor Al Adaid for swimming or photos, and sometimes camel rides or dinner at a desert camp with cultural performances. Some operators run daytime tours, others evening ones that end with sunset over the dunes.

Best time to go

The most comfortable window for a desert safari runs from October to April, when temperatures are milder. Summer trips are possible but demanding due to intense daytime heat, so evening tours are preferable during those months.
